LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer Cobhams Asuquo is known for creating timeless hits, but behind the music lies a journey of resilience, self-acceptance, and tireless dedication.
In a candid interview with Hip TV, the award-winning artiste opened up about life as a completely blind performer in an industry often shaped by visual aesthetics and perception.
Reflecting on his personal and professional journey, Cobhams revealed that his condition has pushed him to work significantly harder than his peers.
“My awareness of myself as a blind person makes me work five times as hard. There’s a stereotype that blind people are incapable, and I’ve always worked to prove otherwise — to show that I am capable of so many things,” he said.

Far from seeing his blindness as a limitation, Cobhams encourages others living with disabilities to fully embrace their reality without euphemisms or denial.
“I think it’s totally okay to be blind. The world has gone soft, and that’s fine. But we also need to be honest about our situations. Don’t sugarcoat it, call it what it is, deal with it, and draw strength from it,” he advised.
The producer further clarified the difference between being “visually impaired” and being “completely blind,” noting the importance of acknowledging the truth of one’s condition.
“Impairment suggests weakness or partial loss, but I don’t have a little bit of vision, I’m completely blind. I can’t see a thing, and that’s totally alright. I’m comfortable with it,” Cobhams added.
With a touch of dark humor and unflinching self-awareness, Cobhams expressed gratitude for his journey and achievements, not in spite of his blindness but because of how it shaped him.
From producing chart-toppers to inspiring countless fans, Cobhams Asuquo continues to break boundaries with vision that goes far beyond sight.
