LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-In a historic moment that beautifully blends history, heritage, and hope, Princess Opeyemi Bright has officially become the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom, at just 29 years old.
Her inauguration marked a defining milestone not just for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, but also for Nigerians in the diaspora and advocates of youth leadership across the globe.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, she has been a resident of Barking and Dagenham since 2009, and elected as the borough’s Councillor at just 22. Since 2018, she tirelessly champions youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunity.

Currently, as the “First Citizen of Barking and Dagenham” she embarks on a fresh chapter in British civic leadership, characterized by cultural pride, generational hope, and deep-rooted community commitment.
During her emotional inauguration speech, she said,
“This is nothing short of God’s grace. I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”
Public service runs deep in Princess Bright’s family. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, previously served as Civic Mayor of Hackney, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a respected senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Bright’s historic achievement adds her to a distinguished list of leaders of Nigerian heritage who are redefining politics globally, including UK Secretary of State Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and US Representative Esther Agbaje, among others.
Bright’s historic political ascent is both a personal triumph and a powerful symbol of the growing political influence of the Nigerian diaspora.
