LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-Haitian music icon Fabrice Rouzier is suing Burna Boy and Joe Dwet File over alleged copyright infringement, for their song “4 Kampe II” ripped off elements from his 2002 hit “Je Vais”.
The case was filed in a United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, with Rouzier arguing that Burna Boy and Joe Dwet File used his story, music, sound recording, and visuals without permission.
He stated that although, Joe Dwet File admitted to using his material, he still went ahead to collaborate with Burna Boy on the song which they released on March 28, 2025.
The Haitian singer claimed that a cease-and-desist letter was sent to Joe Dwet File, after the original version of “4 Kampe” was released. However, the singer allegedly ignored the warning and went ahead with the collaboration.
His proof; the lyrics and stylistic elements allegedly lifted from Je Vais, particularly the French phrase “Cherie, ou sou sa kampe” (“Darling, let’s do this in the standing position”), which Rouzier claims clones the original song’s lyrics and theme.
In addition, Rouzier claimed Burna Boy knew about the copyright issue but proceeded with the project anyway, thereby causing harm to Rouzier’s brand, profits, and professional opportunities.
Following this, Rouzier is seeking damages, reimbursement for legal fees, and a court order prohibiting further use of his image, and creative works in connection with 4 Kampe and the remix, 4 Kampe II. He’s also asking for all copies of the offending materials to be destroyed.
