ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Women in their numbers stormed major streets of Port Harcourt on Wednesday to protest the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The demonstrators, who marched under the banner of the Rivers Women Unite Prayer Group, vehemently opposed the Federal Government’s decision to suspend Governor Fubara and install an interim administrator.
They described the development as an “unconstitutional state of affairs.”
Clad in red attire, the women chanted protest songs while carrying placards with messages such as “We have conscience,” “Bring Back Governor Fubara,” “We are gagged,” “Rivers State economy suffers under Ibas,” and “NBA have conscience.”
This fresh protest follows an earlier demonstration last week, also in support of g SC, overnor Fubara, who was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu amid an escalating political crisis in the state.
Last month, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing unending political instability and what he referred to as concerning security reports, including two pipeline explosions.
“By this declaration,” Tinubu announced, “the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.”
He further appointed Ibas to oversee the affairs of the state pending the resolution of the crisis, a decision that has sparked sharp division across the country.

While Monday’s protesters rejected the President’s action, an earlier women’s demonstration had supported the declaration, calling it constitutional.
Meanwhile, the governors of the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to which Fubara belongs, have rejected the state of emergency.
They have taken the matter to court, challenging what they regard as an unconstitutional imposition.
