ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has extended a hand of fellowship to his opponent, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the state election tribunal’s verdict affirming his victory in the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
“The Governor calls upon all citizens, including the opposition and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, to join hands in the spirit of unity and work together for the progress of Edo State,” Okpebholo stated in a message to the public.
A three-member tribunal panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, dismissed the petition filed by Ighodalo and the PDP, ruling that they failed to present competent witnesses to substantiate claims of non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Channels TV reports that the panel in its judgment, ruled that the petitioners had not provided sufficient evidence to overturn the election results, further reinforcing Okpebholo’s mandate as governor.

Following the judgment, Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State for their continued support.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, he described the victory as one for all Edo citizens.
“This victory is not mine alone but a victory for every citizen and resident of Edo State. It is a mandate to continue the work we have started—to build a state where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We remain committed to our promise of good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.”
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to delivering on its campaign promises, Okpebholo emphasized that his government would not be distracted by legal battles.
“The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo remains focused on delivering on its campaign promises and will not be distracted by frivolous litigation. The administration is committed to serving the people of Edo State with dedication and integrity.”
With the tribunal ruling now in his favour, Okpebholo called for unity, urging all stakeholders to move past partisan differences and work together for the common goal of a prosperous Edo State.
“It is time to put aside partisan differences and focus on the common goal of building a better future for our state,” he stated.
The PDP and Ighodalo are expected to respond to the ruling, with indications that an appeal may be forthcoming. However, Okpebholo’s message remains clear,
Edo State must come first, and all hands must be on deck to ensure its progress.
