ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has revealed that high-profile political figures from across Nigeria are joining the party daily, as part of efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Gabam stated that the SDP recently welcomed former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the APC and remains open to more political heavyweights.
“Virtually every day, we receive decampees to SDP in every state of the federation, including today. I received some in my office—these are dignitaries,” Gabam said.
“If you google, you will see that there are over 300 resignation letters from VIPs. Some of them were Senators, some were Ministers, and they are all joining the party.”
Gabam emphasized that his party’s primary goal is to take over governance from the APC in 2027.

“I am a leader of a political party; my mission is to take over the government. The mission of APC is to retain power, the mission of PDP is to take over power,” he said.
The SDP Chairman expressed confidence in the party’s chances, arguing that the APC-led government is out of touch with the people’s concerns and could face defeat in the next election.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s perceived political brilliance alone is not enough to secure victory for the APC in 2027.
“Anyone can lose an election; it’s not about individual brilliance or strategy. If there was brilliance, if there was efficiency in governance, they wouldn’t be making the mistakes they are making today,” Gabam stated.
He further argued that Nigeria has an abundance of untapped leadership potential, adding that no individual or party has a monopoly on good governance.
“We believe there is a surplus of talents that can deliver leadership in Nigeria. No individual has an exclusive right to quality leadership that isn’t available anywhere else,” he concluded.
With more prominent politicians reportedly joining the SDP, the party is positioning itself as a major contender in the 2027 elections, setting the stage for an intense political battle.
