Although her name may not be recognized by users of the popular “Mammy Market” located in military barracks, school hostels, and NYSC camps, however, Maria, wife to former military Governor Colonel Anthony Ochefu, started as a small trader at the Enugu barracks where she sold kunu, a local millet drink, to soldiers.
Over time, she became popular and fondly called “Mammy” by her customers. She was then awarded a proper stall in the barracks and ever since, the concept of having a “Mammy Market” circulated across barracks and federal institutions in the country.
A journey she started in 1959, becomes a legacy Maria Ochefu, will forever be remembered for.
