LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-Uganda’s Army Chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, announced on Friday that he was quitting X, a social platform where he has been posting controversial messages.
The Army Chief, infamous for his dark posts that usually involved talks of invasion and beheading and many things uncomfortable to his over one million followers made another threatening post this week.
This time, the 50-year-old Kainerugaba, via his X handle, stated that he was impatient in cutting off his political rival’s head, the person of former musician, Bobi Wine, who was now the country’s opposition leader; saying it was the presence of his 80-year-old father Museveni, that still kept him alive.
“If Mzee was not there, I would cut off his head today,” Kainerugaba posted.
Ugandans along with his family’s opposition who were fed up of his rants voiced their criticism, forcing him to make and announce the decision of quitting the social platform.
He however, apologised about the post which he called a joke, but Bobi Wine insisted that it was a threat and would not take it lightly.
The Ugandan government in a statement through a Spokesperson described the post as “casual” remarks that should not be taken as official policy.
On his Friday departure post, Kainerugaba, said Jesus told him to leave so he could free up more time from his tight schedule and focus more on his duties as the leader of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces.
“It is on the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ that I leave this social media and dedicate myself to my assignment to bring peace and security to our region,” his post stated.
A “great whirlwind and rousing journey” he called his 10 years stay on X, with a promise to “re-converge”, he urged his followers to continue supporting his father, whom he called “the greatest general of the resistance.”
His sign off post read, “I know you all love me, and that you will continue to follow me like the wind long after here.”
This is not the first time the controversial leader will announce quitting X. In April 2022, he deactivated his account but returned less than two days into his break.
Over the years, Kainerugaba has come under heavy online fire for making controversial posts. In 2022, the Army Chief made a war threat against Kenya in an X post that read, “It wouldn’t take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture Nairobi.”
A post that made President Museveni, make a public apology to Kenya for his son’s war threat.
He also showed his support to the Tigrayan rebels fighting the government of Ethiopia between 2020 and 2022, saying that Uganda would stand with them and was happy when Russia invaded Ukraine.
In December 2024, he almost destroyed diplomatic ties after he made another threatening post that said he would seize the Khartoum, the capital of Sudan as soon as US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Although the post was later deleted, the damage had already been done and the Ugandan government had to issue an official statement that disassociated the government from his social posts.
The statement said that Kainerugaba, did “not represent the official position” of the government.
Museveni has been the President of Uganda since 1986, ruling the country as an autocratic leader.
