LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-.A US-based Nigerian mathematician, Dr. Akinyemi Agbede, has become a leading political figure in the US, representing the Democrats in the forthcoming California governorship election in November 2026.
He previously ran unsuccessfully as a candidate to be California’s Governor in 2014 and 2018 and as a Senator in 2016 and 2022 respectively. Once again, he joins the race and if successful this time, he will be the first US-based Nigerian native to be Governor of the Golden State.
With all these proof showing his political experience, resilience and leadership qualities, he announced to excited associates and loved ones his candidacy to rerun, after the conclusion of the recent US presidential election.
Dr. Agbede, citing the latest achievement of UK’s Kemi Badenoch, is however, hopeful that this time will be successfully different.

In his candidacy announcement, he said “My relentless pursuit of the exalted position of governor in California is borne out of my commitment to serve the diverse communities of California,”
“The campaign is expected to focus on educational reform, economic development, and social justice—these are issues that resonate deeply with voters across the state.”
Showing support for his political associate and friend, Daudu David, believes that as a pioneer, Dr. Agbede’s, notable experiences stemming from his background in life and politics binds him with the voters who seek change especially those who feel underrepresented in state politics.
David stated, “In an era where diversity and representation are paramount, Dr. Agbede’s candidacy not only highlights the potential of Nigerian Americans in politics but also underscores the importance of inclusive leadership in shaping America’s future,”

Dr Akinyemi Agbede, after studying Mathematics from the University of Lagos in Nigeria, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
He is also known as “The Quintessential Polymath”, who has dedicated his career to empowering students through education in Mathematics, Computer Science, Accounting and many more.
