LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Eggs are one of the most versatile ingredients in the kitchen. Every part of an egg is valuable, as food, skincare, plants and touching-up some minor projects.
Don’t throw those egg shells out, don’t flush that unused egg white/yolk down the drain. Here are six alternative ways you can use an egg:
Do you know that egg whites contain no fat and are high in protein? Aside it’s known use as a face mask, egg whites can also be used as:
- Glue: As it drys up, egg white tend to become stick and can be used as slight adhesive for cardboard or paper.
- Leather Cleaner: Rub gently on a leather surface then wipe down with a piece of clean cloth. It also adds a protective covering to it.
Here’s a fun fact about egg yolks, the name ‘yolk’ is gotten from an Old English word for yellow. Also the yolk’s color depends on the hen’s diet. Use egg yolks as:

- Hair Conditioner: Egg yolk is high in fat which promotes hair shine and enhances softness and nourishes the hair. Mix egg yolk with either water or olive oil and apply to hair for 10mins before washing off with warm water. It is recommended to condition first then shampoo later.
- Egg yolks can also be used to thicken your custard or mayonnaise.
An eggshell is 95 percent calcium carbonate and it’s color is determined by the breed of the hen that laid it. To prove its benefits, it can be used as:
- Fertilizer/ Pest Repellent: Adding crushed eggs to your compost increases the soil calcium nutrients. When sprinkled on plants or soil, its rough surface repels slugs and snails.
- Pan Cleaner: Crush egg shells and mix with soap. It acts as an excellent abrasive for pots and pans.
So you see, an egg is not just a superfood but a super-house full of uses.
