ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, describing him as a patriotic and dedicated Nigerian who worked tirelessly to mediate between him and former President Olusegun Obasanjo during their often-contentious administration from 1999 to 2007.
Atiku acknowledged Ugochukwu’s commitment to neutrality, emphasizing that he never took sides but rather sought peace between them.
He made these remarks in Abuja during a thanksgiving service held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, Wuse, Zone 3, in celebration of Ugochukwu’s 80th birthday.
Ugochukwu, a journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), was recognized for his enduring impact and contributions to Nigeria.
Atiku, in his remarks, said: “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I will not claim that I have known Ogochukwu long enough because we only met during our administration around 1998-99. And till now, we have been in contact with each other.”
Reflecting on Ugochukwu’s efforts, Atiku continued, “During our administration, even when the President and I were having problems, Ogochukwu never took sides.
“Rather, he tried to be a conciliator, and I want to say that all along, I found him to be an extremely dedicated, passionate Nigerian.”

Atiku further praised Ugochukwu’s integrity, stating, “Let me also testify that in all those years that we worked together, I never heard of any unwarranted action by Onyema Ogochukwu. He was, and still is, a credible and perfect gentleman.”
He then turned to Ugochukwu’s wife, adding, “Mrs. Ogochukwu, I think you are very lucky to have him.”
Atiku concluded with warmth and admiration: “Honestly, I want to say that this is one of the very rare events I have put on a public face to identify myself, but I feel extremely delighted to have been part of this event.
“I also look forward to getting to your age. So, once again, congratulations to Onyema Ogochukwu, his family, and the entire people of Abia State and Nigeria in general.”
Vanguard reports that former President Obasanjo, who also spoke at the event, identified himself as “a no-party statesman” and clarified that he no longer aligns with any political party.
He commended Ugochukwu for his loyalty and support during the 1999 presidential campaign, even as Ugochukwu’s friend Chief Alex Ekwueme contested against him within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obasanjo urged Ugochukwu to continue his dedication to God and humanity as he enters this new chapter of life.
The thanksgiving service served as a powerful reminder of Ugochukwu’s legacy of dedication to Nigeria, and both Obasanjo and Atiku expressed their gratitude for his role in their lives and his lifelong service to the nation.
