LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) –South African singer, Tyla, has won the ‘Best Afrobeats Award’ category at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The annual award event, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, the US rapper, took place at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Wednesday.
Tyla secured the coveted Afrobeats award after triumphing over Ayra Starr, Tems, Davido, Lojay, and Burna Boy.
During her speech, Tyla registered her reservation with the way African artistes are always grouped under Afrobeats, despite the diversity of the continent’s musical landscape.

The Amapiano star said: “This is so special, but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for us, but African music is much more than that”.
Taylor Swift, the US singer, dominated the night, winning seven awards, including ‘Video of the Year’ for her hit ‘Fortnight’ featuring Post Malone. The victory solidified her as the most-awarded artiste in VMA history.
Other major wins include Sabrina Carpenter, who took home ‘Song of the Year’, and Chappell Roan’s recognition as ‘Best New Artiste’.
SZA, Eminem, Lenny Kravitz, and Blackpink’s Lisa were also among the night’s notable winners.
