LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Department of State Services has granted administrative bail to president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.

Pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore announced Ajaero’s release in a tweet on Monday night.

“BREAKING: The fascist regime of @officialABAT has released the @NLCHeadquarters President Joe Ajaero from @OfficialDSSNG custody on bail,” he wrote on X.com.

Ajaero was detained on Monday morning at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom for an official engagement.

Various organizations, civil society groups, activists, and prominent figures condemned his arrest and called for his immediate release.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) denounced the arrest and demanded his swift and unconditional release.

In a statement issued Monday evening, the NLC’s National Administrative Council, led by Deputy President Adeyanju Adewale, described the detention as “brazen and illegal,” representing a violation of workers’ rights and democratic principles.

The council set a deadline for Ajaero’s release by midnight on Monday.
