ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A delegation of senators from the South-East geopolitical zone, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, met with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on Wednesday to request the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu,
The senators sought an out-of-court solution to end Kanu’s trial and detention, citing the negative impact of his incarceration on the region’s economy and social life.
Abaribe stated that Kanu has agreed to abide by any conditions set for his release and that his freedom would bring an end to the tension and troubles in the South-East.

The senators handed a letter to the AGF for delivery to President Bola Tinubu, conveying their request for an out-of-court approach. Abaribe emphasized that the demand for Kanu’s release has the unanimous support of political, religious leaders, and stakeholders in the Southeast.
The senator expressed optimism that the AGF would convey their message to the President and use his position to terminate all charges brought against Kanu by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
He noted that Kanu’s continued detention has led to hijacking of the peaceful and legitimate demand by hoodlums and hardened criminals, resulting in wanton killings of innocent people, including security operatives.
The senators’ move is seen as a bid to restore peace to the region, which has been plagued by violence and unrest since Kanu’s arrest in 2021.
