ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments downplaying Nigeria’s struggles by comparing them to other countries.

Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State has emphasised that Nigeria needs concrete solutions, not generalisations, to address its unique challenges.

While receiving a delegation from the National Assembly, President Tinubu had on Monday stated that Nigeria is not the only nation facing poverty and suffering.

He said, “Yes, there is poverty; there is suffering in the land. We are not the only people facing such, but we must face our challenges.”

However, Obi reacting to the statement on X.com on Friday, argued that this approach neglects the country’s specific struggles, including poverty, insecurity, hunger, poor education, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, and income inequality.

Obi lamented that Nigeria is plagued by numerous challenges, including being the “poverty capital of the world”, facing insecurity, hunger, poor education quality, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, and a wide income gap between the rich and the poor.

He expressed disappointment that instead of providing a clear plan to tackle these issues, those in leadership positions often downplay the situation by comparing Nigeria’s struggles to those of other countries.

Obi stressed that true leadership provides direction, guidance, solutions, and reassurance in times of crisis, citing the example of a pilot who assures passengers of their safety during turbulence.

He urged leaders to offer a clear vision and roadmap to overcome obstacles, rather than mere comparisons that dismiss the experiences of Nigerians.

“We require concrete solutions and a clear vision to address these issues, not comparisons that downplay our circumstances,” Obi said.

“We need a comprehensive approach to tackle our specific challenges, not generalizations that dismiss our experiences. A true leader provides direction, guidance, solutions, and reassurance in times of crisis.

“This is the hallmark of visionary leadership and a trait of nations that are making progress and advancing their development.”

Obi called on leaders to offer tangible solutions, not mere reminders that others face similar challenges.

He emphasized that a clear vision and a roadmap are essential to overcome obstacles and ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians.
