LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- As the world marks the 2024 World Food Safety Day, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on governments to prioritize effective food policies, food security, and access to healthy food to improve public health.
While commending the Nigerian government’s efforts to improve food accessibility and affordability, CAPPA notes that food safety remains a critical issue, with many Nigerians facing food shortages, hunger, and inflation due to conflicts and climate change.

“Specifically, CAPPA urges the government to implement strategies to reduce salt and sugar consumption, increase taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, and set mandatory salt limits in food products to tackle the alarming rise of obesity cases and non-communicable diseases.
“CAPPA encourages Nigerians to prioritize their health by making informed food choices, reducing consumption of sugar, salt, and fat, and supporting local farmers to improve the food supply chain. By working together, governments, producers, and consumers can ensure safer, healthier food for all,” the statement stated.
It reiterated the need for vigilance in safeguarding public health and the economy from food-related hazards.
“People must watch their food consumption patterns, making sure to consciously desist from excessive consumption of sugar, salt, and fat, associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases,” it stated.
