LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Anambra State Government has introduced a free vaccination program aimed at protecting girls aged 9-14 from Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).Ā
The initiative, launched in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (APHCDA), seeks to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women in the state.
The program was inaugurated at Michael Tansi Secondary School in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, by Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the state governor.Ā

She emphasized the importance of the vaccine in preventing cervical cancer and encouraged parents, guardians, and teachers to take advantage of the free program.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, and the Executive Secretary/CEO of APHCDA, Pharm. (Mrs.) Chisom Uchem, explained that the vaccine is normally unaffordable for most parents, but the state government is providing it at no cost.
They highlighted the vaccine’s effectiveness in offering long-term protection against cervical cancer.
This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to prioritize women’s and girls’ health and well-being, and reduce the burden of cervical cancer in the state.
