(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has ushered in a new era with the appointment of Amos Dangut as the Head of the Nigeria National Office, succeeding Patrick Areghan, who served in this role since 2020.
Amos Dangut, previously the Deputy Registrar in the HNO’s Office of the Council, brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
He embarked on his journey with WAEC in 1998 as an Assistant Registrar (AR) II and steadily climbed the ranks, becoming a Deputy Registrar in April 2018.
Notably, he earned a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) for his transparent oversight of examinations between 2000 and 2006.
This is according to a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, the acting head of Public Affairs at WAEC.
Born on October 2, 1967, in the Mbar District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, Mr. Dangut received his education at Government Secondary School, Riyom, and Government Science School, Kuru, where he obtained his WASC/SC in 1986.

He later pursued a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, in 1991, and furthered his studies with a Master’s of Science in Animal Science from the University of Ibadan in 1994.
In 2017, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, and a Master of Education (Administration and Planning) in 2020 from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Mr. Dangut’s career at WAEC has seen him serve in various capacities, from Assistant Registrar to Deputy Registrar, across different departments in the council’s zonal offices.
Over the past 25 years, he has harnessed Information and Communications Technology to enhance processes in Test Development, Test Administration, and Post Test Activities.
He is an active member of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) and has presented numerous keynotes and papers at international and national conferences.
Patrick Areghan, his predecessor, left an indelible mark during his tenure as the Head of the Nigeria National Office. Notably, he oversaw the launch of a digital certificate and the introduction of the Educational Statistics (EDUSTAT) platform, which allows stakeholders to access statistics online.
His leadership also led to the establishment of the WAEC Nigeria Digital Printing Press (WNDPP) after 71 years of existence, along with other digital advancements.
WAEC, founded by law in 1952, is the leading examining board in West Africa, serving English-speaking countries such as Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia.
It conducts examinations and issues certificates of internationally recognized standards, playing a vital role in the educational landscape of the region.
