LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Users can now communicate with one another via the TON blockchain network while maintaining their privacy thanks to an encryption layer.

Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram, started development on The Open Network (TON) blockchain in 2018.

Around last year, the TON mainnet went live and was fully functional. The blockchain, which is now under the hands of the TON Foundation, is continually updated to meet the demands of all of its users.

Until recently, the public could read messages that TON users sent to other users that were associated with financial transactions.

However, with the latest upgrade, users will be able to end-to-end encrypt their messages so that only the intended receiver can read them.

TON users who previously sent presents of Toncoin or NFT along with text messages congratulating friends on milestone anniversaries and birthdays will essentially be able to do it with full encryption.

The TON team published a video showcasing this new functionality along with a formal Twitter announcement.

The video demonstrates how encrypting messages on TON would be a choice that users would have to make in order to enable it.

ā€œEven in the event of an apocalypse and the failure of conventional messenger servers, you will retain the ability to send messages via the decentralised TON blockchain,ā€ reports quoted Anatoly Makosov, a Core developer at TON Foundation, as saying.

TON was an idea developed by Durov, the creator of Telegram, however it was eventually shelved. Nevertheless, individuals might build on the blockchain’s open-source code.

Later, with the TON Foundation in charge, the blockchain started to flourish and show potential.

The Layer-1 blockchain network received $10 million (or around Rs. 80 crore) in November 2017 from the cryptocurrency investment firm DWF Labs.

In October of last year, the foundation held an auction of exclusive usernames to promote the usage of this proof-of-stake, environmentally friendly blockchain.

To support its development initiatives, the TON foundation had amassed donations of $1 billion (approximately Rs. 7,900 crore) as of April 2022.

Last year, the only exchange to do so so far was Unocoin, which launched Toncoin for trading in India.

According to CoinMarketCap, the price of one TONCOIN is currently $1.43 (approximately Rs. 117), and its market capitalization is $7.2 billion (about Rs. 59,053 crore).
