A suspected notorious thief was allegedly caught stealing electricity cables from a transformer in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to the Adamawa State News Flash reporter in Maiduguri, the suspect had been stealing cables for a long time before he was eventually caught in the early hours of Wednesday, 17 May, 2023.

The irate mob who caught him, tied him to the metal frames of the transformer.

Stealing of transformer cables is common in Nigeria as some youths see it as a way of fending for themselves.

In July last year, a suspected electric accessories thief was electrocuted at Amoji-Ukwu Village, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Public Relations Officer of Abia State Police Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed that the suspected thief was electrocuted in the early hours while cutting two cables linked to a transformer in the area.

Also in July 2016, three suspects were nabbed after they were caught stealing electricity cables from transformers in Umuahia, Abia State capital.

According to reports, they were caught in the process of removing armored cables attached to an electricity transformer around Udi Street, off Uzokali road in the State capital.

It was a show of shame as irate mob who nabbed them was said to have stripped them naked, beat them to a pulp and tied them to the metal frames of the transformer.

Reports alleged that the suspects were later handed over to police officers from the Udi Division.
