LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Barcelona midfielder, Sergio Busquets has reportedly considered moving to the MLS before deciding to leave Barcelona this summer.
During his 15-year tenure with Barcelona, the 34-year-old has won over 30 trophies, including eight La Liga championships and three Champions League trophies.
Busquets began his career in the La Masia academy in 2005, and after moving up the ranks, he made his La Liga debut against Racing Santander in 2008, before going on to become a legend at the club.
Despite Xavi’s efforts to persuade him to stay for one more season, the midfielder notified Barcelona of his desire to end his career at Camp Nou earlier this month and is now prepared for a new challenge.
Busquets revealed his impending departure in a touching video posted to Barca’s social media pages.
“Hello Culers,” he greeted his followers. “It is now appropriate to declare that this will be my final campaign with Barcelona. The journey was very unforgettable. I’ve been attending matches or watching them on TV ever since I was a kid“
“I’ve always wanted to play in this stadium wearing this shirt. And my dreams have come true even more so. If you had told me fifteen years ago when I first came to the best club in the world, I wouldn’t have believed you“
“The team in which I have been, am, and always will be a supporter, participant, and captain. surpass 700 matches, too“
“It has been an honour, a dream, a source of pride, and meant everything to defend and represent this badge for so many years, but everything has a beginning and an end, and although it has not been an easy decision, I think the time has come…Being a Barca fan is the best thing there is.”
However, he still has the option of moving to the United States, and it has been rumored that Saudi Arabian clubs are interested in him as well but chose to stay at Barcelona for the rest of the season.
Currently, he ranks third among Barcelona players in terms of appearances with 719, after Xavi and Lionel Messi.
With Barcelona, Busquets is on track to capture his sixth La Liga championship overall and he has played 45 times this year for Xavi’s team in all competitions, and he hopes to play on Sunday against Espanyol in the Catalan derby.
