LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Lagos-based spare parts dealer, Ebube Eddy, aka Bebex, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos, for allegedly assaulting a housewife, Omolara James.
Bebex was reportedly arrested and detained following the alleged sexual assault and harassment of a 26-year-old nursing mother in the Papa Ajao area.
The case, which became viral during the Eid holiday, drew the anger of social media users.
A source on Twitter, made several posts on the harassment after the victim made a video of her ordeal.
The lady said that on the day of the incident, she left her baby with someone and stepped out to get food to break the Muslim fast.
She recalled how Bebex, alongside others, catcalled her. When she refused to give her attention, she was harassed and threatened.
The matter was afterwards reported at the Olosan Police Station, where the defendant and officers bullied the victims, forcing her to make a video retracting her allegation.
The Twitter user further revealed that the victim was persistent that the authorities probe the matter, which drew the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa.
On hearing the victim’s account of the report, the CP vowed to get justice for the nursing mother.
Owohunwa ordered the removal of DPO Olosan, Bebex’s arraignment and asked the Police Gender Department to take over the case.
The popular spare parts dealer in Ladipo market was arraigned on three counts before the Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Odubayo, alongside 27-year-old Ali Musa.
The defendant’s charge reads in part: “That you, Ebube Eddy, on the same day, time and place at the aforesaid magisterial district did conduct yourself in a manner to cause a breach of peace by making moves to indecently assault one Omolara James, 26, by wanting to touch her breast and thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 168(d) of the Lagos Criminal Law, 2015.”
Although the defendant and his accomplice were granted bail, Magistrate Odubayo ordered that both be remanded pending perfection of bail conditions.
The case was adjourned till 15 May 2023 for mention.
