LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Sergio Aguero, a former Manchester City player, has discussed the possibility of wearing the team’s uniform to celebrate Pep Guardiola’s team winning another championship.
Soon after joining Barcelona in December 2021, the former Argentine striker received the heartbreaking news that he had an underlying heart disease, forcing him to end his playing career early.
Although it didn’t stop him from donning the complete Albiceleste uniform for their World Cup victory in Qatar the following year, the 34-year-old thinks he would be tempted to do so if City wins again this season.
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s crunch fixture against fellow title chasers Arsenal, Aguero told Stake.com: “[It’s] a key match for sure, but certainly a different game than, say, if Arsenal had a bigger point advantage on the table.
“Now, we can expect a heightened intensity because of how tight it’s become. City has had a fine performance lately. We managed to pull it off last year, and we may just do it this year too.”
Pressed on whether he would be tempted to recreate the full kit celebrations in Qatar for his former club, the Argentine added:“Wouldn’t that be wonderful? I’d love for that to happen. If it does, wherever I might be, I’ll be celebrating, that’s for sure.”
Aguero scored a record 260 goals in 390 games while winning five Premier League championships during his ten-year stay in Manchester, the most notable of which was certainly his contribution to the club’s first league triumph in 2011–12.
Meanwhile, the Argentine’s replacement at City, Erling Haaland is 212 goals short of matching that total in just his first season. According to Sergio Aguero, the Norwegian has been crucial to City’s sustained title defense against a strong Arsenal team.
“I think he [Haaland] is doing brilliant work for his first year in the team,” he added. “He washed off the pressure of a new tournament – it can feel like an uphill battle to adapt to the Premier League and a great team like City. Haaland’s shown he can do it. For all of us who love this club, this is a wonderful moment to enjoy the show – he’s a cracking striker.”
The top teams in the league face off in what is probably the match of the year, and Arsenal must win all three points at the Etihad Stadium to reclaim control of their title hopes.
