ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made a u-turn on the announcement of results in Adamawa State supplementary election.
Senator Aishatu Binani had been declared winner of the governorship election in the State following the collation of results by INEC on Sunday morning.
She was declared winner of the election by Barrister Hudu Yunusa, the Returning Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the Adamawa State election.
However, in a new update by INEC, the commission has dismissed the results and the subsequent announcement.
In a post e-signed by Barrister Festus Okoye on Twitter, INEC noted that in declaring the winner of the election, Yunisa usurped the power of the Returning Officer.
The poste reads: “Breaking News: The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.
“The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect. Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended.
“The REC, Returning Officer and all involved are hereby invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately. Detailed statement to follow shortly.”
