IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – An unapproved 7-storey building under construction has collapsed in Banana Island, Lagos State, on Wednesday evening, according to a press release issued by the Lagos State Government.

The building which is located at First Avenue, Banana Island, reportedly collapsed with many workers trapped under the rubbles.

The news of the building collapse was first reported by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at about 6.12pm on Wednesday, 12 April, 2023.

Confirming the report in the press release titled “PRESS RELEASE LASG INVESTIGATING COLLAPSED BUILDING IN BANANA ISLAND” and signed by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, few people who sustained injuries are being treated.

The press release reads: “An unapproved 7-floor building under construction has collapsed in Banana Island, Lagos State, this evening.

“Few who sustained injuries are being treated. There is no fatality. This unfortunate incident happened while casting was being done.

“The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins was immediately on site to assess the situation and flag- off investigation.

“We ask members of the public to remain calm and expect further information from the ministry as we know more.”

The latest incident happened exactly two months after a three-storey building still under construction on Akanbi Crescent in the Yaba area of Lagos State collapsed.

The building collapsed into another building beside it, according to reports.

According to an eyewitness, a part of the building had collapsed late last year, but the construction did not stop.
