LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Novak Djokovic returned to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday, with a record-breaking 380th week as world number one.
Despite missing US tournaments last month due to his COVID vaccination status, the Serbian tennis superstar has taken the top spot from Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz, who had briefly dethroned Djokovic top spot after his victory in Indian Wells, bowed out of the Miami Open semifinals, allowing Djokovic to reclaim the coveted ranking.
Djokovic now has a 380-point lead over Alcaraz, with Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas trailing behind in third place, more than 1,000 points behind the leading duo. This marks Djokovic’s return to the top spot since September 2022.
His accomplishment portrays he surpasses Roger Federer’s previous record of 310 weeks as world No. 1 and becomes the first player to hold the top spot for 380 weeks.
Also, the latest rankings affected changes in the rest of the top 20, with Karen Khachanov rising five places to 11th and Hubert Hurkacz slipping three places to 12th.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner moved up two places to 9th, and Borna Coric dropped to the 20th spot.
Djokovic’s return to the top spot in the rankings is a testament to his remarkable consistency and longevity in the sport cementing his position as one of the all-time greats.
