ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Some supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, have staged a protest in Abuja, the nation’s capital, over the concluded presidential election in Nigeria, held on 25 February, 2023.
The protesters were seen taking over the Unity Fountain to express their anger.
Dressed in black attires, the protesters called on President Muhammadu Buhari to save Nigeria from collapsing.
They were seen with placards bearing various inscriptions, such as “We stand for Justice, we fight for a new Nigeria”, “President Buhari keep your promise”, “Democracy not INECcracy” “Who owns Nigeria? The people”.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu, of Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the presidential election.
Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes, the highest of all the candidates, thus meeting the first constitutional requirement to be declared the winner.
He also scored over 25 per cent of the votes cast in 30 states, more than the 24 states constitutionally required.
The INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the final results in Abuja, said Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came second in the election. Atiku polled a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election.
Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third in the election with a total of 6,101,533 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
Obi, however, has dragged INEC to court over the result, claiming that he won the election and is ready to take back his mandate.
