The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa who was standing trial over alleged culpable homicide, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Monday.
It will be recalled that last week, a senior magistrate court in Kano had remanded Alhassan Ado Doguwa till Tuesday, 7 March, 2023 over charges bordering on alleged culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of a firearm, mischief by fire and inciting public disturbance.
There was widespread violence that led to deaths and arson in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano during last week’s election, the police had arraigned Doguwa before a Magistrate’s Court on charges of arson and murder.
The lawmaker was arraigned for criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, arson and illegal possession of firearms among others.
But on Monday, in an exparte application for the enforcement of the rights of Alhassan Ado Doguwa moved by Barrister Nuraini Jimoh, the Counsel urged the court to release the accused on bail.
Following his application for bail sought by his counsel, the presiding judge, Justice Yunusa Muhammad granted the application with N500m.
However, many lawyers in the court called the attention of the judge to the motion but the advice was jettisoned as the application was granted.
