LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Two persons have reportedly died in an attack in the campaign office of a House of Representatives candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in Kano.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, noting that two unidentified people in a stalled car within the premises were burned to death after a bunch of suspected thugs set fire to the office.
The Kano State Police Command said it received reports of the incident around 4pm during the collation of results at the INEC office in Tudun Wada Local Government Area.
The thugs reportedly organized and made an attempt to block the road leading to the INEC office, according to Kiyawa.
“Security personnel were immediately mobilised to the scene,” the PPRO said. “One of the thugs was fatally injured and was rushed to Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.”
Noting that an investigation is in progress, he added that “four other suspected thugs were arrested.”
In a similar incident which also occurred on 26 February, at 2.30pm, the Police prevented an attempt to set fire to the INEC office in Takai LGA as the results were being collated.
Kiyawa also noted that the police and other security agencies, in a swift response, prevented the attack, and four suspected thugs were arrested.
“The collation of the results was concluded peacefully and an investigation is in progress,” he said.
