ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has informed businesses and government officials in the State that old naira notes are still a legal tender.
The Governor’s statement is a sharp contrast to President Muhammadu Buhari’s order during a recent nationwide broadcast, where he noted that old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer acceptable.
El-Rufai is of the opinion that he supports the Supreme Court ruling which ascertained that the old notes still remain a legal tender, with the case due for another hearing on Wednesday, 22 February.
In a statement released on Sunday afternoon, the Kaduna State Governor wrote: “KADUNA UPDATE: In line with the subsisting order of the Supreme Court, the Kaduna State Government has directed its ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that their collection agents continue to accept payments made in all denominations of the naira, old and new.”
He also attached a statement signed by Muyiwa Adeleke, his Special Adviser on Media and Communications.
