Many persons are still trapped under a debris after a two-storey building collapsed in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Thursday, 2 February, 2023.
According to Vanguard, two people have died and over 40 others suspected to be trapped under the rubbles of a two storey suspended building which collapsed on Thursday at 7th Avenue, Gwarinpa in Abuja.
Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, the Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, saying her team had rescued 11 persons.
“The persons we rescued have been taken to Gwarimpa General Hospital. We are working to rescue more victims,” she said.
In August last year, a two-storey building collapsed in Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari Area Council of the territory, killing one person and leaving workers trapped.
The building, which was under construction, collapsed at Hamza Abdullahi Street, off Gado Nasco Road.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, who confirmed the development to DAILY POST, said the command has made a necessary deployment to assist with the rescue of victims and the general safety of the area.
According to her, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Sadiq Abubakar had personally visited the scene.
She said the CP during the visit, assured that officers of the command would provide all necessary support to ensure the ease of the rescue operations and to ensure hoodlums do not take advantage of the situation.
“The CP equally pledged the support of the command to aid the functions of Building Regulatory and Investigative Bodies within the FCT.
“He earlier described the situation as very unfortunate, called on the residents of the area to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious movement to relevant authorities particularly the police,” she added.
