American rapper, Robert Rihmeek Williams aka Meek Mill has apologized for filming a music video at Ghana’s presidential palace.
The 35-year-old rapper faced backlash last weekend after he posted a video that was filmed at the Jubilee House governmental building, which serves as both Ghana’s official residence and office for the president.
On Monday morning, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s former deputy education minister, took to Twitter to rip Meek, along with those who approved the music video shoot.
“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately,” he wrote.
“How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively? Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high security installation?”
It didn’t take long for Meek to apologize for his actions.
“My apologies to the people if any disrespect!” Meek tweeted on Monday.
“We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa…what I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the the office also!”
In another tweet, the Philly native wrote: “I’m just not here for no separation of anything black…we already separated enough and don’t understand each others cultures…let’s used [sic] this to help fix that and not more judgement towards each other!”
Tweeps have since reacted to his apology with mixed feelings.
A tweep, jennsenn5 said: “Just asking the president questions in what is on the to do list when in the jubilee house. I don’t think is about separation is just abt knowing what to do and what not to do when one visit the jubilee house since the USA embassy don’t allow ppl to snap pic in their province.”
taadiboy tweeted: “It’s the presidency that should be apologizing to Ghanaians for giving him the space, not him.”
In the same vein, @muafemor said: “We are not blaming you for showing off Africa but Presidency or Jubilee house is the same as the White House in case you have not been told, hey @MeekMill you can come back to Ghana at any time and shoot your video but not restricted areas.”
@Redeemer002 wrote: “We do understand you, bro. It’s our culture as Ghanaians to be talkatives. It’s a political society with little interest in the country.
“This is not going to stop you from pushing Ghana to the top.”
The music video shot in the presidential villa isn’t the rapper’s latest controversy he is surrounded with.
On Saturday night, Meek Mill nearly ended up in a fight of his own while attending Gervonta Davis’ win over Hector Luis Garcia in Washington.
The American rapper showed up to the event to support Tank in the main event, as well as talented welterweight Jaron Ennis who boxed on the undercard.
Also in attendance was former WBC featherweight world champion Gary Russell Jr, along with his boxing brothers who all live locally to the venue.
In the past, Russell Jr has had beef with Gervonta, although a fight between them is yet to materialize.
It was gathered that the Russells ended up in a war of words with Meek Mill, who was cheering in favour of Gervonta.
Midway through round eight tensions boiled over.
An altercation kicked off between the two parties with pushing and shoving at ringside visible on the live Showtime PPV broadcast.
The referee Albert Earl Brown even paused Gervonta’s fight as a result of the dispute.
The situation was resolved without any serious violence and Meek Mill decided to leave the building rather than take on a fight with a family of professional boxers.
