ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has condemned the killing of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State.
Raheem, a lawyer, was allegedly shot and killed by the policeman while returning from church with her husband on 25 December, 2022.
Voiceofnaija.ng reports that Inibehe Effiong, a Public Interest and Human Rights Lawyer, had raised the alarm on the social media over the killing of his colleague by one of the Nigerian police Officers, describing it as barbaric.
The lawyer who was shot and murdered at a close range by ASP Ayuba, was reportedly pregnant.
Effiong took to his Twitter handle on 26 December to write, “This is ASP Ayuba, the rogue policeman at Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah that murdered a pregnant lawyer, Mrs. Bolanle Raheem, on Christmas day while the victim was returning from Church with her husband.
“We were at the station this morning and paid a condolence visit to the family.
“It is a sad commentary that despite EndSARS, Nigerians are still being slaughtered by the police.
“The grieving man that is holding his head with his two hands in the photo is the husband of the deceased lawyer. He could barely utter a word while we were in his house.
“This is how terrible our country has become. The police that is supposed to protect citizens is killing Nigerians with impunity.”
Reacting, the IGP in a statement on Monday, described the incident as unfortunate and sad.
He ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which he emphasized does not portray the Nigeria Police standard operating procedure and core values.
Also, the IGP commiserated with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased as he prays for the repose of her soul.
He further assured the general public of justice in the case, and warns officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties.
