ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Delta State Police Command has arrested five fake operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for kidnap, extortion and other criminal activities.
The suspects are Prince Allison, George Chisom Onyeweagu, Duke Okoro, Joseph Osinachi and Onyocha Stanley.
According to the Police, the suspects were arrested after victims accused the fake anti-graft agents of breaking into their homes at night and demanding huge sums of money from them.
The police stated also that the recent “END EFCC” protest in Ughelli, which resulted in the burning of more than 13 trucks and destruction of property, might have been partially sparked by the group’s activities.
In a statement, the Delta Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, said it swung into action after a distress call from a victim (name withheld) being attacked by the syndicate.
He said the police stormed the syndicate’s hideout in a hotel in Asaba, the state capital, and arrested the five suspects.
Edafe said the suspects had admitted to the crime, adding that investigation was ongoing.
Also, Edafe noted that the suspects admitted they occasionally kept their victims in hotels for days until they were able to extort huge sums of money from them or coerce them into sending money to their mobile POS.
Items recovered from the suspects include a white bus, two EFCC jackets, a POS system and eight cell phones.
