ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Professor Gabriel Yomere has assumed duty as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner, at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Cross River State.
Yomere took over on Thursday, 10 November, 2022, from Alalibo Johnson, who was redeployed to Rivers State.
This was contained in a statement made available on Tuesday by the Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, INEC Cross River State, Anthonia Nwobi.
According to the statement, Yomere was among the 19 newly sworn-in RECs on 3 November, 2022.
Nwobi noted that Yomere had started holding meetings with critical stakeholders in the electoral process and had met with the Commissioner of Police, State Director of DSS, Navy, chairmen of political parties, etc.
The new Resident Electoral Commissioner, who is a strategic management specialist, acquired his first degree, Masters, and Ph.D. in Germany. He is from Delta State.
Before his appointment, he was a lecturer and astute administrator who served in various capacities in both Federal and State universities in Nigeria.
Addressing the management staff on arrival, the new REC urged them to cooperate with him for a successful tenure.
While monitoring the ongoing display of the Preliminary Register of Voters exercise on Tuesday, Yomere said that the activity would last for 14 days.
“The pre-election exercise will give the citizens the opportunity for claims and objections, which will take place simultaneously.
“By claims, they will point out errors made in their names and personal particulars while by objections, they will report to INEC names that they identify on the register that ought not to be there, like names of dead people, under-aged persons, foreigners, etc,” he said.
However, he cautioned that the claims and objections must be backed with authentic proofs.
