Three Girls Drown In Jigawa Pond

IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE Of NAIJA)- Three girls have drowned in a pond in Faskarau, Jae Ward, Kaugama Local Government Area of Jigwawa State.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, CSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the incident in a statement.

He gave names of the girls as Maryam Salisu, 10, Bahayura Lawan,10, and Lawisa Sule, 8.

The remains of the girls were handed over to their respective parents and have been buried according to Islamic rites.

It was also gathered that about twenty years ago, similar incident occurred with three girls losing their lives to the pond.

He said the tragic incident occurred on Monday, 5 September, 2022, when the three girls went to a nearby pond about three hundred meters away from the village to wash their clothes.

“The NSCDC Divisional Officer, Kaugama LGA confirmed that they received a distress call at around 11:10hrs and rushed to the scene with the Divisional disaster management officers for a rescue mission.

And together with the people of the community, they were able to recover the bodies of the three young girls after about 30 minutes of search and rescue mission,” the statement read.

“Immediately the bodies were recovered, they were rushed to the General Hospital Kaugama, where they were certified dead,”

Investigation later revealed that the girls after washing their clothes, decided to take a bath at the pond which eventually led to their death.

Meanwhile, the State Commandant, Musa Alhaji Mala, commiserated with the families of the deceased and enjoined parents to look after their wards especially now that ponds and rivers are flooded.
