At least 20 people are feared dead after a massive explosion hit a mosque in Khair Khana area of Afghanistan’s Kabul during evening prayers on Wednesday, 17 August, 2022.

However, one Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that as many as 35 people may have been wounded or killed, and the toll could rise further.

The Taliban official said the explosion occurred in a mosque among worshippers in Khair Khana area of Kabul.

“A blast happened inside a mosque…. the blast has casualties, but the numbers are not clear yet,” Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said.

Sheikh Amir Mohammad Kabuli a known religious scholar in the Kabul region, was killed in the blast inside the mosque in Khair Khana area.

Kabul’s Emergency Hospital said on Twitter they had received 27 patients wounded in the blast, including a seven-year-old child.

Witnesses told Reuters the powerful explosion was heard in a northern Kabul neighbourhood, shattering windows in nearby buildings.

Afghanistan is a new battle field for different terrorist’s outfits.

Among the killed persons, many are worshipers who were inside the mosque when the incident took place.
